Actian Newsletter - Q4 2012
Dear Actian Customers and Partners,
Here at the end of 2012, it’s a good time to reflect on the momentum that we have built over the course of the year. We continue to drive a strong growth agenda that has seen the addition of many new partners and alliances, rapid customer adoption of Vectorwise, successful roll-out and adoption of Inges 10S, the launch of our first live Action Apps, and the expansion of our business with the planned acquisition of Versant.
As we look forward to 2013, we will continue to innovate and expand our technologies, services and ecosystem to help turn your data into real business value. We will be launching Vectorwise 3.0 in Q1 2013 with many new features specifically designed for big data. We will also be launching our first multi-data source Action Apps and will continue to advance our plans to bring a modern data platform designed for maximizing your success in taking action on big data.
I would like to thank you for your continued commitment and we look forward to sharing more of our successes with you in 2013.

Actian Vectorwise Speeds Up the Large Data Warehouse and Creates Opportunity For Big Data Business Innovation
Vectorwise introduces large data warehouse scalability and positions itself as an ideal platform for building big data applications. “Gartner believes big data will drive $232 Billon in IT spending through 2016,”* says Merv Adrian, Gartner Research VP.
Until now, large data warehouses have been dominated by RDBMS vendors with dated architectures and comparatively expensive hardware costs. Now, Vectorwise scalability provides customers with better choices and the ability to lower the high costs associated with big data warehousing.

Actian has entered into an agreement to acquire Versant, which will bring together two leaders in information management and set the stage for creating a new powerhouse in the emerging market for big data solutions. Gartner believes big data will drive $232 Billon in IT spending through to 2016. Furthermore, the positive alignment of business of Actian and Versant has been noted by both 451 Research and Enterprise Software Group. Evan Quinn, Senior Principal Analyst at Enterprise Solutions Group says, “The pending acquisition of Versant by Actian will create a compelling combination of big data database options for a reinvigorated database pure-play.”

Actian and partner FlyingBinary announce the availability of the record-breaking analytic database Vectorwise in the UK Government G-cloud initiative, known as the CloudStore. FlyingBinary will integrate Actian Vectorwise with Tableau’s data visualization capabilities in a cutting-edge, comprehensive business analytic solution that will enable national and local governments to take advantage of a best-in-class analytics platform with a streamlined procurement process.
The Actian Vectorwise development team is working hard to deliver Vectorwise 3.0 in early 2013. Vectorwise 3.0 will push big data analytics to a higher level. Key features to support bigger data than ever before will include support for scale-out and a high-speed Hadoop data loader. Multiple Vectorwise customers implement Vectorwise as a high performance, highly concurrent analytical data mart on top of Hadoop for unlimited, cost-effective storage. The Hadoop Connector will enable users to use the power of Hadoop to perform easy data selection, filtering and transformation to load data into Vectorwise at unprecedented rates. In addition, Vectorwise 3.0 will add analytical SQL capabilities which will improve performance for aggregates with support of additional SQL constructs such as CUBE and ROLLUP. Intra-row queries will be a lot simpler and faster using the SQL functions LAG and LEAD. Stay tuned for the most exciting Vectorwise release yet.
Members of the OpenROAD development team and customers participated in an OpenROAD Sprint October 9–11 in Langen, Germany. It was Actian's first ever Sprint in Germany, and from all reports it was very successful. Here's what we accomplished.
If you need to meet specific Service Level Availability targets for your systems based on Ingres or Vectorwise, then use our expertise to reduce your risk and get on top of service level management.
Actian’s Enterprise Management Appliance provides 24 x 7 x 365 proactive monitoring and event management of your mission critical Ingres and Vectorwise data services, which can include hardware and applications. This reduces your risk of service outages yet is a low cost, easily implemented solution that can be used to either self-manage or automatically notify Actian (and your own support organization) of any failures or potential service issues thereby enabling Actian (or you) to resolve them before there is any serious impact on your business.
Actian can further reduce your risk by engaging with you to fully manage these important IT services, either on their existing hardware platforms or as a fully hosted solution. Download a data sheet from http://www.actian.com/support-services/services/enterprise-management-services, or contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org if you would like to discuss the different solutions that Actian can provide.
Safe Software and Actian announce that as a result of their continued alliance, read/write support for Ingres tables is now a core capability of the FME platform in the FME 2013 Beta. This development simplifies support in Ingres 10S for the additional geospatial formats offered by FME by eliminating the need for an additional FME plug-in, making it easier than ever for users of Ingres 10S to incorporate spatial data with enterprise data.
OpenROAD 5.1 Service Pack 1 (5.1.1) is now available on all supported Windows, Unix, and Linux platforms that includes bug fixes on all platforms and new operating system support for some of the UNIX/Linux platforms.
Got a big data project coming up? Does it have lots of data, needs to be scalable, potentially with many users who will access the system at any time of the day? Better go shopping for an expensive cluster solution or load balancing software, right? Not necessarily. Another approach may work for you, as explained in this article.
A recent Vectorwise project required support for a large number of users running complex (select) queries against large, mostly static databases. Due to the large number of users and the complexity of the queries, the customer wanted to balance the queries across multiple instances of the same logical database running on different servers. This would provide users reliable and consistent response times. A simple but effective solution was implemented with Ingres/Vectorwise—without using any expensive third-party load balancing product or clustering.
Introducing the Actian Client Runtime for Windows! It provides a means for 32-bit applications to connect to remote Ingres, Vectorwise, Enterprise Access or EDBC databases, simplifying deployment of client-only installations.
Until recently, it has been nearly impossible to bridge the UTF-8 (Unicode) world, which is required in Vectorwise, with non-UTF-8 data in the Ingres family of products (Ingres DBMS, OpenROAD, etc). Client and server installations both had to use a character set of UTF-8, or neither! This is no longer the case with the new transliteration support added to Vectorwise 2.5. Interoperability is greatly enhanced by addition of this feature.
